NBA 2026-27 Season Preview: Predictions & Odds

There is plenty of excitement ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season. The Big Apple is riding high after the New York Knicks broke a 53-year title drought, and there are several NBA teams looking to feel that same catharsis. Most NBA predictions have the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder listed as virtual co-favorites in NBA betting odds, but the Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves are seen as legitimate contenders. Philadelphia is looking to break a 44-year title drought, while Minnesota is hoping to make its first NBA Finals after losing in the Western Conference Finals in two of the last three seasons.

When Does the NBA Season Start?

This might be the most anticipated NBA season in recent memory. There have been two straight elite draft classes, and we have seen a huge changing of the guard. San Antonio emerged as contenders faster than any NBA predictions anticipated last year, finishing with a 62-20 record and making the NBA Finals after seven straight seasons where they failed to win more than 34 games. If Dylan Harper has a strong sophomore season, the Spurs could emerge as the new powerhouse in the league.

My favorite basketball prediction is that the Philadelphia 76ers won’t win a playoff series. Although the 76ers are currently the favorites to win the Eastern Conference per NBA predictions 2026, this is not a team you can feel very confident about even with the Jaylen Brown trade. Brown was not great in Boston’s first-round playoff loss to Philly last season, and Joel Embiid can never stay healthy for long. Much was made about the 76ers signing LeBron James in the offseason, but James has the potential to be more of a hindrance than a help at 42 years old.

NBA Championship Odds and Title Contenders

The NBA teams at the head of the pack coming into the 2026-27 NBA season are the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. Every other Western Conference team is at least 10-1 to win the NBA title, so most NBA predictions have either the Spurs or the Thunder making the NBA Finals. There is much more parity in the Eastern Conference per NBA predictions 2026. Seven teams in the East have conference NBA title odds of 10-1 or less, and only three teams are over 75-1 to make the NBA Finals.

Championship Favorites

San Antonio and Oklahoma City are co-favorites at +270 to win the NBA title. The Thunder were the favorites entering last season after winning the 2024-25 NBA Championship, and they swept the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers in the first two rounds of last season’s playoffs before falling to the Spurs in seven games. Both teams have a core of young, talented players and could be contenders for several years.

Teams That Could Challenge the Favorites

The Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks have the next lowest NBA title odds. I believe that Philadelphia will be a massive disappointment, and the New York Knicks are likely to regress too. All five of the Knicks’ starters from last season will return, but Mikal Bridges, Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Josh Hart are now on the wrong side of 30 and OG Anunoby will turn 30 next summer.

Boston has the fifth-lowest NBA title odds, but I don’t think much of the Celtics either. A healthy Jayson Tatum will make Boston competitive, yet there are still a lot of questions on this roster.

I’d much rather make a bet from the next tier of favorites. Denver and Minnesota have the potential to upset the apple cart in the West behind their franchise superstars, while there is value in Cleveland, Detroit, and Miami winning the Eastern Conference.

Eastern Conference Predictions

Most NBA predictions will have one of the Atlantic Division teams winning the Eastern Conference. The only one of the NBA teams in that division that is more than 25-1 to win the NBA Championship is Brooklyn.

Eastern Conference Teams to Watch

My money will be on Cleveland, Detroit, and Miami in the Eastern Conference. All three of those teams are over 20-1 in NBA Championship odds, and they all have a talented core of players. If I had to pick one team to bet on from this bunch, it would be the Pistons. No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham is putting it all together and will be entering his sixth season, and both Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson have the potential to make leaps this year.

Western Conference Predictions

You won’t find many NBA predictions pieces going against the two juggernauts in the Western Conference. Oklahoma City and San Antonio were the two best teams by a mile in the regular season last year, and it’s very likely that the Thunder and Spurs will meet in the Western Conference Finals again. The oddsmakers believe that the only NBA teams that can challenge Oklahoma City and San Antonio in the West are Denver and Minnesota since every other team is at least 20-1 to win the Western Conference.

Western Conference Teams to Watch

Nikola Jokic will make Denver competitive as long as he is healthy. Jokic is the best offensive big man in the NBA, and the three-time NBA MVP led the Nuggets to a title just a few years ago. The big question for Denver is the supporting cast, and the addition of DeMar DeRozan has the potential to help in a big way.

Minnesota is incredibly interesting. The Timberwolves made it to the Western Conference Finals before falling to Dallas in 2024 and Oklahoma City in 2025. It was widely panned at the time, but the decision to add Rudy Gobert has worked out well, so the Timberwolves took another big swing by trading for LaMelo Ball in July. Minnesota mortgaged its future and dealt Naz Reid to land Ball, so this franchise is in Win Now mode.

NBA Teams That Could Surprise in 2026

From a simple odds perspective, one of the NBA teams to watch is the Orlando Magic. Many NBA predictions pegged the Magic as a potential sleeper last season, but Orlando proved to be a massive disappointment. Now, there is value in the Magic at 80-1 with a new head coach and a potential superstar in 2022 No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero.

If you are looking for a real longshot, the New Orleans Pelicans are worth a look at 400-1 to win the NBA title. New Orleans has been a franchise in disarray for some time, but there is some potential here. Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen both had solid rookie seasons, and Zion Williamson is entering the penultimate year of his contract extension.

NBA Season Betting Markets to Watch

It has become more popular to bet NBA futures in recent years, and there is now betting on more player awards other than just NBA MVP and NBA Rookie of the Year. You will be able to make a basketball prediction on virtually anything this NBA season.

NBA Futures and Season Win Totals

Unsurprisingly, NBA predictions have Oklahoma City and San Antonio well out in front of the field in terms of season win totals. The Thunder and Spurs both have season win totals of 60+, while the next closest team is the New York Knicks at 52.5. Every other team has a season win total of 50.5 or less, showcasing that the last two Western Conference Finals winners are in a league of their own.

Player Awards and Prop Markets

Victor Wembanyama is the favorite to be named NBA MVP. Wembanyama is just scratching the surface of his potential, and we saw him make dozens of highlight reel plays last season. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named NBA MVP for two straight years, but it will be very difficult for him to win this award a third time. The last player to be named NBA MVP in three consecutive seasons was Larry Bird back in the mid-1980s.

Final NBA Season Predictions for 2026

My final NBA predictions for this season will be for the Oklahoma City Thunder to put last year’s disappointment in the rear-view mirror. I believe the Thunder will once again be the best of the NBA teams during the NBA season, and that they will claim their second NBA Championship in three years. I have the Thunder meeting the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals and beating the Pistons in five games.
