What Are Teaser Bets
A teaser bet is a type of parlay that allows you to adjust the point spread or total in your
favor across multiple games. Think of it as buying extra points to make your bets easier to
win—but in exchange, you'll accept lower payouts than a traditional parlay. Teasers are most
popular in football (NFL and college) and basketball, where point spreads play a major role.
Instead of betting the Patriots at -8.5, a 6-point teaser lets you move that line down to -2.5,
significantly improving your chances of covering. The catch? You must combine at least two
bets, and all selections must win for your teaser to cash.
How Teaser Bets Work
Teasers operate like parlays with a built-in safety net. You select two or more games and
adjust each line by a fixed number of points—typically 6, 6.5, or 7 points in football, and 4,
4.5, or 5 points in basketball. Every leg of your teaser must win; if even one loses, the entire
bet is lost.
For example, say you like two NFL favorites: the Chiefs at -7.5 and the Bills at -9. With a 6-
point teaser, you'd shift both lines in your favor—Chiefs -1.5 and Bills -3. Now both teams just
need to win by a field goal or more instead of covering larger spreads. The tradeoff? Your
payout drops from around +260 on a standard two-team parlay to roughly -110 or -120 on the
teaser.
Advantages of Teaser Bets
-
Better Odds of Winning
Moving the spread 6 or 7 points dramatically increases your
likelihood of success, especially when teasing through key numbers like 3 and 7 in football. -
Control the Risk
Teasers let you play aggressive with favorites or conservative with
underdogs, tailoring the risk to your strategy. -
Lower Variance
Compared to straight parlays, teasers offer more consistent,
manageable swings—ideal for bettors who want excitement without extreme volatility. -
Strategic Flexibility
Sharp bettors exploit "Wong teasers" (crossing key numbers) to
find mathematically advantageous spots that can beat the bookmaker long-term. -
Great for Correlated Games
Teasing totals or spreads in games with similar
conditions (weather, pace) can create value when done strategically.
