College Football Week 3 Predictions, Odds & Best Bets

Week 3 college football brings a much stronger board than the opening weeks, with three ranked-vs-ranked matchups and several conference games that should tell us much more about where teams stand. The new AP Top 25 puts Texas at No. 1, Georgia at No. 2 and Notre Dame at No. 3, while Ohio State falls to No. 6 after its loss to Texas. LSU and Ole Miss move into the top eight, setting up one of the weekend’s biggest games.

Our college football predictions this week focus on seven matchups where the current form, matchup numbers and betting lines give us something meaningful to work with. The strongest college football picks do not all come from favorites. SMU, Houston and North Carolina each bring underdog value, while Georgia and LSU have cases as favorites.

The current college football odds also create several different betting approaches. We have short spreads, a few large numbers and totals that deserve more attention than the headline matchup alone. The goal is not to force action on every game. It is to separate the strongest predictions from the best betting opportunities.

Top College Football Games This Week

Week 3 has enough quality college football games to make the national college football schedule interesting from Friday night through the final Saturday window. Three ranked-vs-ranked matchups stand out, while several SEC and ACC games should provide a better test than what many teams saw in the opening weeks.

Ranked Matchups

No. 22 Houston visits No. 13 Texas Tech on Friday night, followed Saturday by No. 16 SMU at No. 23 Louisville. The biggest game is No. 7 LSU at No. 8 Ole Miss, a matchup between unbeaten SEC teams with a spread of only 2.5 points.

Conference Showdowns

No. 2 Georgia visits Arkansas, No. 10 Alabama hosts Florida State, Florida travels to Auburn, and North Carolina visits Clemson. Georgia and Alabama are substantial favorites, while Florida-Auburn and North Carolina-Clemson are both priced as close games.

Rivalry Games to Watch

LSU-Ole Miss carries the strongest rivalry feel among the big games and it will be the featured game of the week with Lane Kiffin returning to face a hostile Ole Miss crowd. The teams have split the last two meetings, and Ole Miss won 24-19 last season. Florida-Auburn also renews a long SEC series, with Auburn winning three of the last four meetings even though Florida won the most recent matchup in 2019.

College Football Weekly Predictions

Our college football predictions are based on current performance, matchup strengths, turnover concerns, recent head-to-head results and the number attached to each game. These college football picks are game predictions first. The betting recommendations come later, where price matters more.

Game-by-Game Predictions

Texas Tech should win at home, but Houston has shown enough offensive balance to stay within one score for much of the game. Georgia has too much on both sides of the ball for Arkansas. North Carolina has been better than Clemson through two weeks and has a real chance to win outright.

Alabama should beat Florida State, though the spread is large enough to make the margin less certain. SMU has the stronger early profile than Louisville and has won the last two meetings. Florida’s offensive production gives the Gators an edge at Auburn. LSU gets the call over Ole Miss because its defense has been much stronger through two games.

Upset Alerts

The two best upset possibilities are SMU at Louisville and North Carolina at Clemson. SMU is 2-0 and has covered both games, while Clemson is 1-1 and has failed to cover either game. North Carolina is also 2-0 and already owns a neutral-site win over TCU.

Score Predictions

Matchup Prediction
Houston at Texas Tech Texas Tech 31, Houston 27
Georgia at Arkansas Georgia 45, Arkansas 17
North Carolina at Clemson North Carolina 24, Clemson 20
Florida State at Alabama Alabama 34, Florida State 17
SMU at Louisville SMU 34, Louisville 31
Florida at Auburn Florida 27, Auburn 20
LSU at Ole Miss LSU 31, Ole Miss 27

College Football Betting Odds

The college football odds for these featured games range from near pick’em prices to spreads above three touchdowns. That variety matters because the best team is not always the best wager. The current NCAA football odds and NCAAF odds also show where a moneyline may offer better value than laying or taking points. That is especially true in the two short underdog spots.

Point Spreads

Texas Tech is -9.5 against Houston. Georgia is -24.5 at Arkansas, Clemson is -4.5 against North Carolina, and Alabama is -18.5 against Florida State. Louisville is -2.5 against SMU, Florida is -2.5 at Auburn, and LSU is -2.5 at Ole Miss.

Those numbers make SMU, North Carolina and Houston the most interesting underdogs. Georgia and LSU stand out most among the favorites because their current statistical advantages are easier to identify.

Moneyline Odds

SMU is +105 at Louisville, while North Carolina is +168 at Clemson. Houston is +300 at Texas Tech, which offers a larger return but requires a much bigger upset. Florida is -140 at Auburn and LSU is -132 at Ole Miss. Georgia is -4000, which offers little practical moneyline value.

Over/Under Totals

Some of the totals we are looking at include 52.5 for Houston-Texas Tech, 53.5 for Georgia-Arkansas, 44.5 for North Carolina-Clemson, 50.5 for Florida State-Alabama, 60.5 for SMU-Louisville, 53.5 for Florida-Auburn and 59.5 for LSU-Ole Miss. Florida-Auburn Under 53.5 is the total that stands out most.

Best College Football Bets This Week

The college football best bets are narrower than the prediction list. A team can be our expected winner without being worth a wager at the current price. These college football betting picks focus on where the spread, moneyline or total still gives us enough room.

Best Spread Bets

Houston +9.5 is attractive because the Cougars are 2-0, Texas Tech has failed to cover either game, and Houston has averaged 308 rushing yards per game.

Georgia -24.5 is the favorite we are most comfortable laying points with after opening 2-0 straight up and against the spread while allowing only 11.5 points per game.

LSU -2.5 also deserves consideration. The Tigers are allowing just 12.0 points per game, while Ole Miss has allowed 23.5.

Best Moneyline Picks

SMU +105 is our favorite moneyline play. The Mustangs are 2-0 and have covered both games, and they have beaten Louisville in each of the last two seasons. North Carolina +168 is a smaller upset option against a Clemson team that has failed to cover either game.

Best Totals Bets

Florida-Auburn Under 53.5 is the best total. Both defenses are allowing 12.0 points per game, Auburn’s first two games stayed Under, and three of the last four meetings finished below the total. LSU-Ole Miss Under 59.5 is a secondary option because LSU’s defense has been excellent.

Games With the Biggest Betting Value

College football betting value is not always the same as picking the most likely winner. The best number can belong to an underdog, while a strong favorite can become unattractive if the spread gets too large. These college football betting picks are where the current price and matchup meet most cleanly.

Underdogs Worth Backing

SMU +2.5 and North Carolina +4.5 are the two underdogs we like most. SMU is 2-0 and has covered both games, while Louisville is 1-1. North Carolina is 2-0 and has allowed only 13 points through two games. Houston +9.5 also remains playable because the Cougars have enough rushing production to shorten the game and keep Texas Tech from getting comfortable.

Favorite Teams Worth Laying Points

Georgia -24.5 is the best bet of the large favorites. The Bulldogs have scored 133 points through two games and have covered both spreads. LSU -2.5 is the better short favorite because its defense has separated it from Ole Miss so far, particularly against the run.

Trap Games

Clemson -4.5 is dangerous because the Tigers have not covered a spread yet and have averaged only 16 points per game. Alabama -18.5 also requires caution. Alabama has looked excellent, but Florida State beat the Crimson Tide 31-17 last season and is getting almost three touchdowns this time. Neither favorite is an automatic fade, but both prices demand more caution than the team names might suggest.

Teams Trending Up and Down

The early college football rankings are already moving quickly, and Week 3 should create more changes. Several college football teams have built strong starts, while others are winning without covering or have already taken a damaging loss. The first two weeks have also shown that results and betting performance can point in different directions.

Teams on Winning Streaks

Some of the big-name teams on early winning streaks are Georgia, LSU, SMU, Florida and Houston. All five teams are 2-0. Georgia has covered both games, SMU has covered both, and LSU opened with a 51-10 win over Clemson before beating Louisiana Tech 45-14. Florida has scored 118 points in two games.

Teams Losing Momentum

Clemson is 1-1 and has failed to cover either game after a 51-10 loss to LSU and a 22-7 win over Georgia Southern. Florida State is also 1-1 and 0-2 ATS. Arkansas is 1-1 and 0-2 ATS after losing 43-10 at Utah. Ole Miss is 2-0, but the Rebels have failed to cover both spreads. That does not make Ole Miss a bad team, but it does show why the betting result can differ from the straight-up result.

Injury Updates

Ole Miss tight end Caleb Odom missed the Charlotte game but could return against LSU. Texas Tech tight end Terrance Carter missed Week 2 because of a foot injury. Clemson quarterback Christopher Vizzina is being evaluated for an elbow injury, although Tait Reynolds currently leads Clemson in passing.

Players to Watch This Week

Several college football players in our featured games have already established themselves as major parts of their offenses. The NCAA football players to watch this week are not limited to quarterbacks because a few running backs and defensive players have produced equally important early numbers. Those individual matchups could matter in several games with short spreads.

Quarterbacks to Watch

SMU’s Kevin Jennings has 767 passing yards through two games. LSU’s Sam Leavitt has thrown for 574 yards, while Georgia’s Gunner Stockton has 436. North Carolina’s Billy Edwards Jr. has 476 passing yards, and Alabama’s Keelon Russell has 444.

Impact Playmakers

Florida running back Jadan Baugh has 296 rushing yards and five touchdowns, making him one of the most productive skill players on the board. Georgia’s Nate Frazier has four rushing touchdowns, while Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy has three touchdowns. Louisville’s Tre Richardson has 181 receiving yards, and North Carolina tight end Jelani Thurman has 165.

Defensive Difference-Makers

LSU’s Princewill Umanmielen already has five sacks. North Carolina’s Xavier Lewis has four, giving the Tar Heels a pass-rush threat against Clemson. Auburn defensive back Andre Jordan Jr. has two interceptions, while Alabama’s Devan Thompkins has two sacks. Those defensive players matter because several of our featured spreads could turn on one or two negative plays, sacks or takeaways.

Factors Behind Our Weekly Picks

Good college football betting tips start with more than records and rankings. Our college football analysis weighs home field, turnovers and schedule context because those factors can explain why two teams with similar records may deserve very different prices.

Home-Field Advantage

Louisville, Clemson, Auburn and Ole Miss all host games in which the spread is 4.5 points or less. That matters, but we are not automatically taking the home team. SMU and North Carolina have shown enough through two games to overcome that edge, while LSU’s defensive advantage gives the Tigers a strong case at Ole Miss.

Turnover Matchups

Turnovers are one reason not to make LSU a stronger play. The Tigers have already committed five. Alabama, Auburn and SMU each have four. Georgia has only two, which adds to the case for laying the large number against Arkansas.

Strength of Schedule

The quality of the first two opponents matters. LSU’s 51-10 win over Clemson is more informative than a blowout of an overmatched opponent. SMU already won at Florida State, while North Carolina beat TCU 15-10 at a neutral site. Those results carry more weight in our picks than inflated numbers built entirely against weaker competition.

Looking Ahead to Next Week

The next college football schedule is already loaded with games that could reshape the rankings again. Several upcoming college football games involve teams currently inside the AP Top 25, and a few early lines are already available. Week 4 should also give voters a much better read on several teams that have opened against mixed levels of competition.

Early Lines to Watch

No. 24 Oklahoma visits No. 2 Georgia with Georgia -10 and a total of 52.5. No. 21 Oregon visits No. 12 USC with Oregon -5.5 and a 58.5 total. No. 9 Texas A&M travels to No. 7 LSU, where LSU is -3 with a 56.5 total.

Potential Ranked Matchups

Based on the current poll, Oklahoma-Georgia, Oregon-USC and Texas A&M-LSU would all be ranked matchups. No. 1 Texas also visits No. 15 Tennessee, giving Week 4 another potential Top 15 game. No. 8 Ole Miss travels to Florida, which is currently just outside the rankings.

Games With Playoff Implications

Georgia-Oklahoma, Texas-Tennessee and Texas A&M-LSU could have the biggest early impact because each includes at least one current Top 10 team. Oregon-USC also matters after Oregon’s early loss dropped the Ducks to No. 21. One more loss would leave Oregon with very little room for error, making that trip to USC especially important.
