Sunday Night Football: Eagles at Commanders Predictions
This might be the least anticipated Sunday night football game of the season. The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders are both three games under .500, and both teams are very unlikely to make the postseason at this point. That was somewhat expected for the Commanders, but the Eagles were favored to win the division in the preseason.
Nick Sirianni will probably miss the playoffs for the first time in his career, and Philadelphia is a big underdog in NFL Sunday Night Football odds without Jalen Hurts. Keep reading below to find our Sunday night football picks.
Sunday Night Football Matchup Preview
Washington and Philadelphia have already met once this season. The Eagles squeaked out a 24-22 win over the Commanders back in Week 1, but this is a much different Philadelphia team. That’s why the Commanders are favored by six points in this NFL Sunday night game. Philadelphia has lost five straight games after a 2-0 start, while Washington is coming off a bye week ahead of this Sunday night football matchup.
Home teams are 6-1 so far in the Sunday night football schedule through the first seven weeks of the NFL season. The only host that failed to win was the Atlanta Falcons back in Week 5 who lost in overtime to the Baltimore Ravens. That bodes well for the Washington Commanders coming into this game.
Team Records & Recent Form
Philadelphia is 2-5 SU heading into this game. The Eagles have covered the spread just one time over their last nine games though as they were moderate favorites in their victories over Washington and Tennessee to start the season.
Washington is 1-4-1 SU on the season and 3-3 ATS. The Commanders have only been favored one time in their last 10 games prior to Sunday night, and that was in their 27-27 tie against the New York Giants in Week 5.
Key Injuries & Roster Updates
It’s been the proverbial ‘Year from Hell’ for the Philadelphia Eagles. Jalen Hurts will miss the rest of the season due to blood clots in his lungs. Running backs Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley are both on injured reserve. Saquon Barkley has been hampered by multiple injuries that caused him to miss two of Philadelphia’s last three games and is questionable to play, while star receiver DeVonta Smith has only played one time over the last month due to a persistent hamstring issue.
Defensively, the Eagles are limited in depth in the secondary with three players out and two defensive backs questionable, and there are six players tagged with a questionable designation in the two-deep of Philly’s front seven.
The Commanders are dealing with injuries to many of their skill position players too. Top running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt was placed on IR due to a groin injury, top receiver Terry McLauren is out with a knee injury, and fellow starting receivers Stefon Diggs and Treylon Burks are both questionable. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil is injured and won’t be able to protect Jayden Daniels’ blind side, and Washington is dealing with some depth issues in their defensive front seven too.
Storylines to Watch
Dan Quinn sits atop the First Coach Fired odds at many sportsbooks. Quinn took Washington to the NFC Championship Game, where the Commanders lost to the Eagles, just two seasons ago. However, Washington went 5-12 last season and is off to a rough start in 2026. Quinn’s decision making has come into question too after some baffling late game decisions over Washington’s last two games.
Fourth-year quarterback Tanner McKee has taken over as Philadelphia’s starting quarterback with Jalen Hurts out. The offense is very different as McKee is not a running threat, but he is the most experienced quarterback on the roster. Backup Joe Milton has thrown just 53 passes in his three-year NFL career, and Cole Payton is a rookie who was a fifth-round draft pick.
Sunday Night Football Odds
The Sunday Night Football odds have moved significantly in favor of the Washington Commanders. Initially, Washington was a four-point favorite, but the Commanders are now six-point favorites per the NFL odds.
Point Spread Odds
Washington Commanders -6 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Moneyline Odds
Philadelphia Eagles ML +190
Washington Commanders ML -230
Over/Under Odds
Total: 40.5 points.
Sunday Night Football Predictions
Everyone seems to be on Washington in their Sunday night football predictions. The Commanders are coming off a bye week, and this is a must-win game for Dan Quinn. However, I think this Washington team has major issues and stands a real chance of losing on Sunday night. Philadelphia took a second half lead against Dallas last week and kept it close for three quarters in a game that wasn’t as lopsided as the final score indicates.
Winner Prediction
I will go against the grain and pick Philadelphia to cover the spread and win outright.
Score Prediction
Philadelphia Eagles 20, Washington Commanders 16
X-Factor of the Game
The Philadelphia defensive line will make a world of difference in this game. Although the Eagles rank dead last in sack rate, Washington does not have a good offensive line. That will affect Jayden Daniels’ efficacy, and it will lead to Philadelphia winning a low-scoring game.
Best Bets for Sunday Night Football
My favorite bet for Sunday Night Football is Philadelphia moneyline. The Eagles won’t make the playoffs, but everyone is willing to completely write this team off. They aren’t as bad as pundits are making them out to be despite their injury issues, and I trust Nick Sirianni much more than I trust Dan Quinn.
The Under in this game is a good bet too. Both teams are dealing with a lot of injuries to their skill position players, so it’s unlikely that we will see many big plays on Sunday night.
Best Spread Bet
I believe that Philadelphia will stay within the number on Sunday night. The Eagles were short favorites in NFL Game of the Year lines in the preseason, and they have been competitive in each of their last four losses.
Best Moneyline Bet
My favorite underdog moneyline in Week 8 is Philadelphia. The NFL odds have moved so far in favor of the Commanders, that the Eagles are one of my NFL best bets this week.
Best Total Bet
The Under has to be the play for Sunday Night Football. I don’t think either of these offenses will be able to sustain long drives, leading to a lot of punts and field goal attempts.
Sunday Night Football Player Props
It’s a bit tough to come up with bets on NFL Players props this week due to all the injuries to skill position players for both teams. However, I feel that there is some value in these SNF player props.
Passing Props
Tanner McKee Over 200.5 Passing Yards is a good bet although McKee is averaging just 5.3 YPA. McKee has thrown for over 210 yards in his two previous starts, and he appears to be getting more comfortable in this offense.
Rushing Props
Although Rachaad White is nominally the starting running back for Washington now, I am betting White Under 45.5 Rushing Yards. He has not recorded more than eight carries in any game this season, and it looks like the Commanders will be splitting carries between White, Jeremy McNichols, and Austin Ekeler.
Receiving Props
No Washington receiver has a total higher than 41.5 receiving yards with Terry McLaurin out of the lineup. Someone will have to step up and become a target for Jayden Daniels, and my money is on Antonio Williams. He had three catches for 50 yards in the Commanders’ last game, and Williams is the only starting receiver without an injury designation.
Anytime Touchdown Scorer
Saquon Barkley has to be the choice here as long as he plays for Philadelphia on Sunday night. The Eagles will have to lean on Barkley in the absence of so many talented players, and he is a dual threat running back.
Sunday Night Football Betting Trends
One of the big NFL betting trends this year is that home teams are 6-1 on Sunday Night Football. That’s a significant number since road teams have an NFL ATS hit rate of almost 58% through seven weeks.
Against the Spread Trends
Road teams and underdogs have been great bets overall this season, and road underdogs have covered over 60% of the time.
Over/Under Trends
The Under has cashed in two straight Sunday Night Football games, but the Over is 8-2 in Washington’s last ten games dating back to last season.
Head-to-Head Trends
Eight of the last ten games between these teams have gone over the total. Philadelphia has wn seven of its last ten against Washington, but the Commanders have covered two in a row in this series.
