Monday Night Football Predictions: Broncos vs. Chiefs

The first week of the 2026 NFL season will conclude with a Monday night football game between AFC West rivals Denver and Kansas City. The Broncos are still hurting after being the No. 1 overall seed and failing to make it to the Super Bowl last season, while the Chiefs are out to prove that last season as a fluke and not the start of a downturn. Monday Night Football Matchup Preview

Denver broke Kansas City’s grip on the AFC West last season. The Chiefs won nine straight division titles prior to last year, when the Broncos finished 14-3 and earned a first-round bye. Now, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs aim to prove that last year’s 6-11 record was a momentary hiccup.

The oddsmakers still give the Chiefs a lot of respect, so Kansas City has been installed as a short favorite on NFL Monday night. There are some who believe that Denver was very fortunate last season too, as the Broncos missed the playoffs in eight straight seasons from 2016 to 2023 and snuck into the postseason as a No. 7 seed in 2024 before last year’s success.

Team Records & Recent Form

This will be the opening game for each team, so both the Broncos and Chiefs are 0-0.

Key Injuries & Roster Updates

Both Denver and Kansas City were able to avoid major injuries during preseason and training camp. The Broncos are happy to have Bo Nix healthy once again after their starting quarterback suffered a fractured right ankle in the playoff win against Buffalo last season. Nix underwent surgeries in January and April, and he appears healthy once again from what we saw in the preseason.

Kansas City’s superstar quarterback is healthy, and a long offseason might have done Patrick Mahomes a world of good. Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee last December, ending any hope of the Chiefs turning things around in 2025. The Chiefs have been very cautious with Mahomes in the run up to this season, but he looks ready to take the reins once more and Andy Reid said there will be no limitations on him in Week 1.

Storylines to Watch

The health of both teams’ quarterbacks is the biggest storyline entering this game. Nix may have figured out a lot in his second season, so the Broncos are hoping he can pick up where he left off. As for Mahomes, everyone knows how important he is to Kansas City and the Chiefs’ Super Bowl chances this season.

Monday Night Football Odds

There has been some movement in the NFL odds of many Week 1 football games. Oddsmakers set lines as soon as the opening schedule was announced, allowing bettors the opportunity to wager on these games for the last several months. There weren’t big changes to the Monday night football odds though, as the spread has remained unchanged and the total has only risen by a point.

Monday Night Football Predictions

Denver won in Kansas City for the first time since 2015 last season. That was a long-awaited victory for the Broncos and their fans, but I just don’t see it happening again here. The Chiefs figure to be much healthier and more well-rested than we have seen in some time, so I expect Kansas City to start its season with a statement. My Monday night football picks have Kansas City covering the spread in a game that isn’t very high scoring.

Winner Prediction

Kansas City Chiefs

Score Prediction

Kansas City Chiefs 23, Denver Broncos 17

X-Factor of the Game

Free agent signing Kenneth Walker III should finally give the Chiefs the reliable running back they need to move the chains. Walker was the Super Bowl MVP and Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded running back last season, so he is the rare free agent running back that could significantly help his new team. Kansas City hasn’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since Kareem Hunt eclipsed the milestone in 2017, and the Chiefs have long needed a ground game to keep some of the pressure off Mahomes.

Best Bets for Monday Night Football

I believe that Walker will have a surprisingly effective night against an elite defense to make Kansas City one of my Monday night football best bets. Denver has an excellent defense and allowed an NFL best 4.5 yards per play last season. The Broncos are much better in the secondary than they are up front though, and I believe the Chiefs will find something that works to keep Denver’s defense a bit off balance.

Monday Night Football Player Props

There are quite a few Monday night football player props that I like in this game. NFL Player Props have grown significantly in popularity since the advent of fantasy football, and the sportsbooks have increasingly given us more and more NFL props to wager on for every game during the regular season and playoffs.

Passing Props

The passing yards props for Bo Nix and Patrick Mahomes are almost identical. I don’t think either player gets there in this game, but I especially don’t think that Nix throws for over 227.5 passing yards. Denver is a team that wants to run the ball, and bettors are getting distracted by Nix passing for 279 yards and three touchdowns against Buffalo in the playoffs. Nix hit those numbers on 46 pass attempts, and it’s highly unlikely that he throws the ball that many times on Monday night. Nix threw for 212 passing yards or less nine times in the regular season last year, and he only finished with 182 passing yards in Arrowhead Stadium last time.

Rushing Props

Kenneth Walker III should be able to give Kansas City a big spark in the run game. Walker’s over/under in this game is just 60.5 rushing yards, and I believe he will get there with ease. The fifth year running back came on strong at the end of last season, and his ability to move the chains against both the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers gives me faith that he will go over the total on Monday.

Receiving Props

Travis Kelce is nearing the end of his career, and he has become something of a punching bag due to his relationship with Taylor Swift. However, there is no doubt that Kelce will be a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection as he has more than 1,000 receptions and over 13,000 receiving yards. Kelce will probably wear down over the course of this season, but I think he will have some good performances in September, so I will bet Kelce over 42.5 receiving yards.

Anytime Touchdown Scorer

The two best bets here are Walker and Kelce. At least one of them should be able to find the end zone as Walker is the Chiefs’ top running back with a bullet, while Kelce has always been Patrick Mahomes’ favorite red zone target.

Monday Night Football Betting Trends

There are no NFL betting trends to report yet since this is Week 1. However, as the season progresses, we will monitor the NFL ATS records of every team.

Against the Spread Trends

This will be the first Monday Night Football game of the season.

Over/Under Trends

This will be the first Monday Night Football game of the season.

Head-to-Head Trends

Kansas City absolutely dominated Denver for eight straight seasons. The Chiefs won 16 straight games against the Broncos from 2015 to 2023, but Denver has turned the tables in recent years. The Broncos have won three straight games against the Chiefs in Mile High Stadium and knocked off Kansas City in Arrowhead Stadium to secure their first season sweep of their rivals since 2014.

How to Bet on Monday Night Football

Betting on Monday Night Football is just like betting the NFL on other days. The only thing to keep in mind is that this is the last game of the week, so many bettors will be looking to either solidify their winnings or break even after a bad Sunday.

Understanding NFL Betting Markets

It’s important to watch key numbers in the NFL. Games are very likely to be decided by a single score, so numbers like 3, 4, 6, and 7 are all important. The number 3 is by far the most important number of the bunch, and it takes a lot of action to move a spread onto or off of 3.

Tips for Betting Monday Night Football

Keep an eye on the injury report and the weather if teams are playing in an outdoor stadium.
