Who Can Win the Big Ten Championship?

The favorite to win the Big Ten is Ohio State, but the odds do not point to a runaway race. The Buckeyes are +189, Oregon is +252 and Indiana is +257. All three are also priced below +800 to win the national championship, which gives the conference a clear top tier.

Ohio State has the shortest price because of its overall talent, proven quarterback Julian Sayin and star receiver Jeremiah Smith. Smith was voted preseason Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year after producing 2,558 receiving yards and 29 total touchdowns across his first two seasons.

Oregon returns quarterback Dante Moore after a 3,565-yard, 30-touchdown season. The Ducks also return major defensive talent and rank among the conference leaders in returning production. Indiana lost several championship contributors but reloaded through the transfer portal, led by quarterback Josh Hoover.

What Could Open the Door for a New Champion

The top three all have questions. Ohio State must replace most of a dominant defense and faces a difficult schedule. Oregon lost both coordinators and must rebuild parts of its offensive line. Penn State is the surprise selection. Matt Campbell inherits a program with major turnover, but the defense should remain competitive and the schedule is favorable. The Nittany Lions avoid several of the conference’s strongest teams and have time to develop before their most important games.

A Penn State championship would require the transferred Iowa State core to outperform expectations. That is far from certain, but the combination of price and schedule makes the Nittany Lions more interesting than USC or Michigan at shorter odds.
