It is no surprise to see Ohio State and Texas leading the way, as it is a familiar position for both schools, but while Ohio State was the No. 2 seed entering the 2025-26 College Football Playoff, Texas missed out entirely on the CFP. The Longhorns were the preseason favorites to win the NCAAF National Championship, yet they lost three games and ended up finishing just outside the final CFP Playoff Rankings.

Other favorites with NCAAF odds to win championship of under 10-1 are the Georgia Bulldogs, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oregon Ducks, and the defending champion Indiana Hoosiers. At this point, it’s really hard to imagine a team outside one of the Power Four conferences winning the title, so all of those teams are at least 300-1 to win the NCAAF Championship.

When the initial NCAAF Championship odds were released in February, Ohio State and Notre Dame were the co-favorites. However, we have seen a lot of action on Oregon and Texas as Dante Moore and Arch Manning both decided to stay with their teams.

The favorites to win the NCAAF National Championship aside from Texas and Ohio State are Notre Dame, Oregon, Indiana, and Georgia.

Many are expecting a bounce-back year from Arch Manning. He was the preseason favorite to win the Heisman Trophy entering last season, but Manning was not very efficient. He completed just 61.4% of his passes, and he had to rely on his legs far too often.

Ohio State might be the most talented team in the country. The Buckeyes have an extremely talented receiving corps, and they could be the lone favorite per the NCAAF Championship odds if Julian Sayin turns the corner. He struggled in Ohio State’s consecutive losses to close the season last year, throwing two interceptions and three touchdowns while getting sacked 10 times.

The Fighting Irish are hoping their young quarterback can turn the corner too. C.J. Carr showed some flashes during his freshman season, and an above average quarterback can make Notre Dame a strong contender. Head coach Marcus Freeman is an excellent defensive mind, so there’s little doubt that his team will once again have an elite defense.

What Makes a Team a National Championship Contender?

Quarterback play is essential in making a team a national title contender. Only a handful of teams have won a national championship without solid quarterback play, and those teams are usually loaded with talent at every other position.

Elite defenses are the other key factor to look for in potential title contenders. Nick Saban showed us just how important defensive line play was during his Alabama tenure, and that still holds true.

Teams With Value Beyond the Favorites

Texas A&M is a team with real value at almost 20-1. The Aggies have a fantastic coach in Mike Elko, and they figure to have an excellent defense once again. Quarterback play is the big question mark as Marcel Reed struggled against quality defenses last season.

In a similar vein, Oklahoma has a lot of value at 30-1. Brent Venables does an excellent job on the defensive side of the ball, and the Sooners are hoping that John Mateer can play much better in his second season in Norman. Mateer was one of the most prized transfers last summer, but he was not as effective as many were predicting.

My NCAAF Championship prediction calls for Ohio State to meet Texas A&M in the NCAAF National Championship. I just don’t understand people jumping on the Texas bandwagon once again after last year’s disappointment, especially when the Aggies have a better coach and might have a better defense. As for the Buckeyes, there is no denying their talent, and they figure to be college football’s new dynasty in this era.

In addition to elite quarterbacks and strong defenses, schedule strength plays a big part in making NCAAF Championship predictions. Too many tough road games can ruin a team’s chances, even with the expanded playoff.

My top two NCAAF Championship picks are Ohio State at +655 and Texas A&M at +1850. The Buckeyes and Aggies both made the College Football Playoff last year, and both programs are loaded with talent once more.

Best Value Picks

There is significant value in either Texas A&M or Oklahoma to win the national championship. The Aggies and Sooners both have defensive-minded coaches and potentially elite defenses, and they could both truly contend with above average quarterback play.

Longshot Picks to Watch

The best longshot pick on the board is BYU at over 85-1 to win the national title. BYU boasts one of the easiest schedules in the country for major conference teams, and Kalani Sitake led the Cougars to a 12-2 record last season. Although they were unable to beat Texas Tech in either of their two meetings, the Cougars looked dominant against the rest of the Big XI. There are real concerns about the Red Raiders this season, and BYU might be poised to win the conference.

NCAAF Championship Games and Conference Impact

In the current College Football Playoff format, NCAAF Championship Games are extremely important. The five highest-ranked conference champions earn a spot in the 12-team CFP, so every title game has massive importance. An underdog winning can potentially steal an at-large berth too just like we see in March Madness.

ACC Championship NCAAF Betting Impact

Florida State and Clemson have both fallen off dramatically over the last few seasons. That has hurt the overall strength of the ACC, and the conference might be a one-bid league this year even though both Miami (FL) and SMU made it to the CFP last year.
