The Detroit Lions enter the 2026 NFL season as favorites to win the NFC North, even after finishing last in the division a year ago at 9-8. NFC North Division Overview

The NFC North produced a remarkably close four-team finish last season. Chicago won the division at 11-6, but Green Bay finished only one and a half games behind at 9-7-1. Detroit and Minnesota both went 9-8, leaving every team within two victories of first place.

The NFC North includes the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. Chicago is the defending champion. Detroit enters 2026 as the betting favorite, with Green Bay, Chicago and Minnesota following in that order.

Why the NFC North Race Matters

Every NFC North team has won the division at least twice over the last nine seasons, which reflects how quickly control can change. Chicago went from last place to first under Johnson, while Detroit moved from first to last after losing both coordinators and dealing with major injuries.

Detroit is favored to win the NFC North, but the market does not treat the Lions as an overwhelming choice. Green Bay and Chicago are both within striking distance, while Minnesota has the longest price despite finishing with the same record as Detroit last season.

Detroit’s +156 price reflects its offensive strength, favorable schedule and expectation of better health. Green Bay is next at +273, followed closely by Chicago at +301. Minnesota sits at +401, which gives the Vikings the clearest long-shot value if they get good quarterback play.

NFC North Odds Movement

The early odds had Detroit between +145 and +186, Green Bay between +210 and +273, Chicago between +301 and +310, and Minnesota between +401 and +525. The current odds give Detroit a shorter price than most earlier odds. Minnesota has also shortened considerably from several +500 prices. Green Bay has moved the other direction compared with its +210 and +225 listings, while Chicago has remained relatively stable.

The supporting markets reinforce Detroit’s position. The Lions have a 10.5-win total and are -241 to make the playoffs. Chicago and Green Bay both have 9.5-win totals, while Minnesota is listed at 8.5.

NFC North Standings and Recent Results

Chicago won the NFC North in 2025, but the final table shows how little separated the division. Every team finished above .500, and the gap between first and last was only two games.

Chicago earned its first division title since 2018 and won a playoff game for the first time in 15 years. Green Bay returned to the postseason for a third straight season. Minnesota won its final five games, while Detroit missed the playoffs after dropping from 15 wins in 2024 to nine.

Detroit’s last-place finish is misleading when viewed beside the scoring numbers. The Lions led the division in points and posted the best point differential at plus-68. Green Bay finished at plus-31, Chicago at plus-26 and Minnesota at plus-11.

Chicago’s 11 wins included seven victories after trailing in the final two minutes, and the defense produced 33 takeaways. Those results helped win the division, but they may be difficult to repeat. Detroit’s record, meanwhile, appears weaker than its overall production.

Each NFC North team has a realistic path to first place, but each also carries a clear concern. Detroit has the strongest combination of offense and schedule. Chicago must handle regression pressure, Green Bay needs health and pass-rush answers, and Minnesota needs better quarterback play.

Detroit Lions Division Outlook

Detroit remains loaded with offensive talent. Jared Goff has led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns over the last four seasons, while Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta give the Lions multiple playmakers. Gibbs becomes the featured back after David Montgomery’s departure. The concern is an offensive line overhaul and uncertainty in the secondary, especially with Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph recovering from injuries. Still, Detroit led the division with 481 points and owns the sixth-easiest schedule. That combination makes the Lions a deserving favorite at +156.

Green Bay Packers Division Outlook

Green Bay finished 9-7-1 and reached the playoffs for a third straight season, but the roster lost several important contributors. Rashan Gary, Romeo Doubs, Elgton Jenkins, Quay Walker, Nate Hobbs and Dontayvion Wicks are gone, while Micah Parsons may miss the opening part of the season. Jordan Love still leads an offense that has ranked fifth in yards per play and points per drive since he became the starter. The Packers also allowed only 360 points last year. Their +273 price is reasonable, but the third-hardest schedule and early pass-rush questions create real risk.

Chicago Bears Division Outlook

Chicago went 11-6 and won the division in Johnson’s first season, but the Bears face a difficult repeat. Caleb Williams showed high-end playmaking ability, yet he completed only 58.1% of his passes and must become more consistent. Chicago also lost Kevin Byard, Tremaine Edmunds and Nahshon Wright from a defense that led the league with 33 takeaways. The Bears won seven games after trailing in the final two minutes and now face the NFL’s toughest schedule. The offense can keep them in contention, but the +301 price still requires Chicago to overcome several strong regression indicators.

Minnesota Vikings Division Outlook

Minnesota finished 9-8 despite poor quarterback production and now turns to a competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy. Murray has the stronger MVP price at +4524 and appears favored to start, but he played only five games last season. The offense still features Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Jauan Jennings and T.J. Hockenson. Minnesota also allowed a division-low 333 points and ranked among the league’s best defenses in yards per play and pressure rate. The losses of Jonathan Greenard, Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave matter, but +401 gives the Vikings a legitimate sleeper case.

NFC North Stats to Know

The NFC North statistics show why Detroit is favored despite last season’s standings. Chicago won the division, but Detroit produced the strongest offense and best point differential. Minnesota and Green Bay were more dependable defensively.

Detroit led the division with 481 points and 28.3 points per game. Chicago followed with 441 points and 25.9 per game. Green Bay scored 391 points and averaged 23.0, while Minnesota finished with 344 points and 20.2 per game.

Gibbs led the division with 1,223 rushing yards and averaged 71.9 per game. He also caught 77 passes for 616 yards and five touchdowns, showing why Detroit plans to expand his workload. Green Bay has ranked fifth in yards per play and points per drive since Love became the starter in 2023.

Key Defensive Stats

Minnesota allowed the fewest points in the division at 333. Green Bay allowed 360, Detroit allowed 413 and Chicago allowed 415. The Vikings also allowed 4.7 yards per play, gave up 1.69 points per drive and generated pressure at a 44.5% rate.

Chicago’s defense created a league-high 33 takeaways, but several starters departed during the offseason. Detroit’s secondary dealt with 31 missed games among Week 1 starters and enters 2026 with more health questions. Those changes make defensive continuity a major factor throughout the division.

NFC North Predictions

The NFC North is close enough that price matters as much as team quality. Detroit deserves favorite status, but the division also contains two credible alternatives and one defending champion facing a difficult repeat.

Best Bet to Win NFC North

Detroit at +156 is the best bet. The Lions led the division in scoring, posted the best point differential and finished only two games behind Chicago. They also own the sixth-easiest schedule, while every other NFC North team ranks 22nd or worse.

The offensive line must improve, and the secondary must get healthier. Still, Detroit has the strongest combination of quarterback stability, playmakers, coaching continuity and schedule advantage. ESPN Analytics also gives the Lions the highest division probability at 38%.

NFC North Sleeper Pick

Minnesota at +401 is the sleeper. The Vikings finished 9-8 despite weak quarterback play and still allowed the fewest points in the division. Their defense ranked third in yards per play allowed and produced the league’s highest-pressure rate.

Murray carries durability concerns, but even a moderate upgrade at quarterback could change the offense. Jefferson, Addison, Jennings and Hockenson give him enough support to make Minnesota dangerous.

NFC North Team to Avoid

Chicago is the team to avoid at +301. The Bears are talented, but seven late comeback wins and 33 takeaways are difficult to reproduce. They also face the NFL’s toughest schedule and lost several important defenders. Chicago can remain competitive without winning the division, which makes the current price less attractive.

Factors That Could Decide the NFC North

Quarterback development and schedule strength should decide the NFC North. Detroit has the clearest schedule advantage and the most stable quarterback situation, while each rival enters the season with a more significant question.

Quarterback Play

Caleb Williams owns the shortest MVP odds among NFC North quarterbacks at +1608, followed by Jordan Love at +1809, Jared Goff at +3820 and Kyler Murray at +4524. Williams carries the strongest market expectation but must become more consistent. Love must carry an offense dealing with several departures, while Goff offers the most stability.

Minnesota faces the largest uncertainty. Murray appears favored over McCarthy, but he has missed 30 of 68 games over the last five seasons. If Murray stays healthy and fits Kevin O’Connell’s offense, the Vikings could outperform their price.

Strength of Schedule

Detroit has the sixth-easiest schedule based on opponents’ 2025 winning percentage at .467. Minnesota ranks 22nd at .519, Green Bay ranks 29th at .538 and Chicago faces the league’s hardest schedule at .550.

That gap strongly favors Detroit. The Lions receive a last-place schedule despite finishing only two games behind Chicago. The Bears must defend their title against the toughest opponents, while Green Bay also faces a difficult path.
