The key to the World Cup Final is whether or not Spain can effectively limit Lionel Messi. We have seen Messi clinically break down opponents once again at this World Cup, and Messi will likely win his third Golden Ball of the last four World Cups on Sunday. The GOAT has not faced a team quite like Spain at this World Cup though.

Spain are tenacious defenders that know how to control possession and tempo better than any other country in the world. This will be Messi’s biggest challenge yet, but the 39-year-old might be running on empty after two comeback wins and two 120-minute matches over the last two weeks.

How Each Team Reached the Final

Spain were not overly impressive in the Group Stage, leading to the pre-tournament favorites ballooning to as much as 8-1 to win the World Cup before the knockout rounds. La Roja have controlled all their matches, but they needed late goals from super sub Mikel Merino to beat both Belgium and Portugal.

Argentina were dominant in the Group Stage, besting all of their opponents by multiple goals. They have had a much tougher time in the knockout rounds though as Cape Verde and Switzerland played Argentina level for 90 minutes, while Argentina had to rally late from a 2-0 deficit against Egypt and a 1-0 deficit against England.

Biggest Advantages for Both Teams

Tiki taka is the biggest edge for Spain. It has been ingrained into Spanish footballing culture at this point, and that style allows Spain to frustrate opponents by controlling possession and pace. Even the Spanish nationals not playing with a domestic club are very familiar with that brand, and it allows Spain to be extremely cohesive.

The biggest advantage for Argentina has to be Lionel Messi. We have never seen a footballing talent like him, as his ability to score and create goals over the last two decades has been unmatched. Messi makes Argentina a threat to win any game.

FIFA World Cup Final Betting Odds

Average bettors might be surprised to find that the World Cup betting odds favor Spain in this matchup. Spain have not had the flashy moments that we have seen from Argentina, but they have played more cohesive football to get to this point. La Roja will also be less fatigued than Argentina, as Spain played on Tuesday instead of Wednesday, and Spain have defeated all of their opponents in regulation while never trailing.

Moneyline, Handicap, and Total Goals Odds

Spain is currently a -160 favorite to win the World Cup. Spain are not odds-on favorites on the three-way line though with La Roja listed at +125 to win the match in regulation. Argentina are +273 to win this match in regulation, while a full-time draw has odds of +205. The total is listed at 2.5 goals, but that number is shaded toward the Under at -149.

There has been little line movement so far ahead of the final. We could see some action closer to kickoff though, and a surprise addition or removal from the Starting XI could lead to a change in the soccer betting odds too.

There are hundreds of ways to bet on the World Cup Final. However, my favorite bet is a simple one. I like Spain to win in regulation at +125. This is a bad tactical matchup for an Argentina side that is not going to be as fresh as their opponent. While Spain don’t have a clinical striker that can punish back lines like other teams, they have a phenom of their own in Lamine Yamal alongside some of the best defensive midfielders and wingers in the world.

Other opponents were quick to bunker against Argentina, allowing Messi the opportunity to continually probe for weaknesses. Most notably, England completed just 26 passes from the moment they went up 1-0 to the minute they fell behind. That is not something we will see out of Spain. The reigning European champions will control the ball for long stretches, and I believe that will frustrate an already fatigued Argentinian side.

World Cup betting is all about value, and another great bet is Argentina not to keep a clean sheet at -335. Emiliano Martinez has not had a great World Cup, and he has been worth negative goals for Argentina per xG. Argentina have allowed six goals over their last four matches, and I believe that Spain will break down this back line several times.

Best Team Bets for the Final

My favorite team bet for the World Cup Final is Spain to win to nil at +245. Argentina have looked incredible at times on the attack, but everything runs through Messi. The captain has netted eight goals so far at this World Cup, and he has four assists as well. However, Spain are the first team with the talent to really limit his touches and playmaking, and that has the potential to short circuit the entire Argentina attack. 

Goal Scorer and Player Prop Picks

The top bet for a goal scorer is Mikel Oyarzabal at +450. Spain’s top forward has netted five goals in this World Cup, and he is also the team’s designated penalty taker. Oyarzabal is cool and collected from the spot, and he is the primary beneficiary of Lamine Yamal’s dazzling runs as the center forward in Spain’s formation.

Expert Predictions for the World Cup Final

The New York Times has given us wall-to-wall coverage of this tournament, and they have eight 2026 World Cup predictions experts giving their insights for the match on Sunday. Six of their eight writers are backing Spain after the dominant La Roja victory over France, and Spain are very likely to have at least the Golden Glove winner in Unai Simon as well as the FIFA Young Player Award in either Lamine Yamal or Pau Cubarsi.

Most World Cup predictions are going to call for a low-scoring final. Very few experts have the guts to call for a World Cup Final with more than three goals, even though the last two World Cup Finals saw a total of 10 goals netted in regulation. Oddsmakers certainly seem to believe there will be two or less goals too given the juice on Under 2.5 goals.

The most likely result in my eyes is a 2-0 win for Spain. I believe that La Roja will score late in the first half or early in the second half, and their possession will force Argentina to take increasing risks in order to level. That will open the door for Spain to score a clincher late on their way to the country’s second World Cup title.

Small Details That Could Decide the Final

If Argentina does end up pulling off the upset, it might be due to some overconfidence from Unai Simon. We have seen Simon aggressively charge off his line on multiple occasions, and he isn’t afraid to hold the ball for a bit longer than most goalkeepers. A Simon misstep could really open the door for Messi and Argentina.

Players Expected to Make the Biggest Impact

There is no doubt that Lionel Messi has silenced Cristiano Ronaldo and other claimants for the title of modern day GOAT. Messi will be the player that the cameras watch the most during this match, as the hopes of a nation once again largely rest on his shoulders.

While Argentina have the best player in this match, Spain have the best team and maybe the next best four or five World Cup players. Lamine Yamal is seen as the next great superstar, and the teenager has made some dazzling plays at this World Cup despite his relative inexperience on the international stage. Yamal’s Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsi has seen his stock drastically rise too with many heralding the 19-year-old as the next great center back.

Chelsea fans were disheartened to see Marc Cucurella leave for Real Madrid last month. Cucurella has a seemingly unlimited amount of energy and is a winger that can create and defend with the top FIFA World Cup players at this tournament. No opponent has dribbled past Cucurella in each of Spain’s last five matches, limiting opponents’ opportunities on the counter.

Finally, there is 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri. The defensive midfielder has been fantastic for both Spain and Manchester City. Rodri’s passing will be pivotal to Spain’s hopes in this match.

Players Who Could Surprise Fans in the Final

If Argentina pull off the upset, Enzo Fernandez could play a huge role. We have seen some great play out of Fernandez at this World Cup, and he was one of Argentina’s top-rated players in their semifinal win over England.

Lautaro Martinez has been incredibly important off the bench too. Martinez is Argentina’s second-leading goal scorer at this World Cup, and he has shown a knack for netting decisive goals late in matches.

Biggest Matchups to Watch in the World Cup Final

The last meeting between Spain and Argentina happened in 2018. Spain dominated Argentina 6-1 in a friendly, as Isco netted a hat trick. However, Messi did not suit up in that match, and very few players that will be on the field on Sunday took part in that tilt.

Argentina really struggled along the right side against England. Giuliani Simeone was Argentina’s second lowest-rated player against the Three Lions, and Nahuel Molina did not acquit himself well either. This is one of those World Cup matchups that Spain could take full advantage of in this match.

Coaching Decisions to Watch

Don’t expect Spain manager Luis de la Fuente to park the bus if his team takes the lead. Everyone has seen that backfire spectacularly against Argentina, and that style of play is antithetical to the team’s DNA. It will be interesting to see how de la Fuente deploys late in the match too after Argentina brings on Martinez.
